Yggrasil is the tree of the cosmos that holds the nine worlds in Norse Mythology. Midgard (Middle Earth) is the realm of the humans, which is protected by Thor.
I used the Younger Futhark (Scandinavian Futhark) of the scandinavian Norsemen (Vikings). It has been used between the 9th and the 11th century. These are the Runes of Old Norse. The Elder Futhark is Proto-Norse and was used before the Viking age (8th century). Most of the runestone inscriptions contain Younger Futhark Runes.
The Runes on the bottom are from the Fyrby Runestone (Sö 56) Södermanland, Sweden.

English: I know the brothers Hástein and Holmstein, the most rune-skilled men in Middle Earth, placed a stone and many letters in memory of Freystein, their father.

thanks for your great work! I really enjoy your wallpapers, especially because they're not so overloaded like many others. I think you should do a series with the old gods such as odin, thor, tyr, etc
in this case the word Midgard maybe a little misleading for as yggdrasil contains all nine worlds and not only earth..
finally I would like to ask you if I can get a version without the letters/runes?
